Get outside!

I have just been for the most lovely run around Hyde Park on this beautiful sunny day, and it got me thinking about the difference between the gym and the park. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for the gym, its great for weight training, group classes, use of machines etc. but I have personally found over the past few weeks that nothing can really beat running outside, especially when it’s a lovely day. I actually quite like running outside when it’s raining too…something quite satisfying about it!

Recently I have started running outside more and more, and I have found that I have more energy and my skin has improved a lot. This is because of the fresh air, which is so good for you for so many reasons, here are just a few:

  • It cleans out our lungs (especially when you are out in the countryside and not the city)
  • It helps relieve stress
  • Exercising outside teaches our body to breathe more deeply which increases the amount of oxygen getting to our brain and our muscles.
  • You will be more focused in work, whether that’s at school or at your job, because your brain needs 20% of your body’s oxygen and therefore the more fresh air and oxygen you are getting the clearer your brain will become and the more concentrated you will be.
  • It is so good for your skin

Exercising outside is not only good because of the fresh air but also because of sunlight. Vitamin D is essential for healthy bones and we get this from sunlight. Being outside for just 30 minutes can give you nearly a days worth of Vitamin D!

So enough with the benefits of exercising outside, without all the machines in the gym and guidance from trainers, what do you actually do? Well personally when I was at school I used to be able to run for an hour and not get bored, however now I find I am bored within 5 minutes. So what I do is set myself a circuit before I go out and I usually do a lot of sprints because not only do I enjoy sprinting, but it is also extremely good for fitness and fat burning. I then do some abs exercises and legs too. My circuits vary everyday so that my mind and my body don’t get bored, and also so I challenge myself each day! I’ll be posting some of my circuits soon!

If you’re not the sort of person who likes running or circuits, going on long walks is also amazing. I highly recommend that you don’t take your phone with you and just have a nice relaxing uninterrupted hour or so. It’s also amazing for leg toning, and a great way to catch up with friends and family.

I really cannot recommend exercising outside more, or just getting out at all! I always feel fantastic afterwards, and yes of course I sometimes (most times) find it hard to motivate myself to actually get up and go, but once I am out I love it!
