We woke up very early this morning as we had a long drive to get to Wanaka, and of course we wanted to stop at a few key places along the way!
The weather today was dreadful and it just reminded us of how lucky we were yesterday to get the only perfect sunny day in-between two really bad days!
Our first stop was Fox Glacier which, to be honest, was a bit of a disappointment. Due to the weather the main path to the glacier was shut…we only realised this after quite a steep long walk…typical! However once again we just laughed about it and made light of the situation as usual…even though we were both wet through from the constant rain, but we have learnt just to embrace that now!
We walked back to the camper (deciding along the way not to tell anyone passing us that the wet walk wasn’t worth it…) and drove on to Lake Matheson.
Lake Matheson is famous for its mirror views of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman. Unfortunately because the weather wasn’t at its best, we didn’t get the best reflection on the lake, however it was beautiful and for me it was a good one to check off the list having been drilled by my Aunt that I must go there!
When we reached Haast we stopped off at Curly Tree, one of the best Whitebait companies which make really yummy traditional whitebait patties. We did wonder whether we were in the right place to start with as it was down a dirt track and the company was just in someones garage! For anyone who doesn’t like fish that much these are not for you, luckily Elliot and I both love fish and so these were right up our street…plus it was a lovely quick break from driving.
The woman who made the patties was obviously very passionate about Whitebait fishing and so chatted to us for a long time about that, it was very interesting and we have both decided that we should come back in the fishing season to make some money…like $99 for every 1kg we catch!!!
We kept driving and had one last stop at Thunder Creek Falls which had a 29metre drop, so pretty spectacular!
We managed to get to our campsite in Wanaka before dark and stayed in a really lovely place with the most incredible view of Lake Wanaka (I obviously have failed at my only job of taking a picture of it…so sorry about that!)
After a long day of driving we decided to treat ourselves to rather a large dinner followed by far too many pancakes and way too much chocolate sauce. We both sat in the kitchen afterwards for about an hour in total silence feeling really REALLY sick before managing to waddle back to our camper for bed.
Even though the weather was bad today and we had a lot of driving, it was once again a really lovely day, and I can’t believe we are already half way through our trip!
Bye for now
